Last night I finished reading the book John by Cynthia Lennon. It gave an inside look at the life of The Beatles, specifically John Lennon. I can honestly say that I will never listen to their music in the same way. I am still trying to decide if this is a good or bad feeling. It was a great book and very interesting to see what John’s early life was like, and to really get to see him as a person and what inspired the music he made. He and Paul McCartney have written some of the greatest lyrics of all times, so it was very intriguing for me to see what was going on their lives when these words were recorded.
However, if anyone knows anything about John’s life, it is one that is almost heartbreaking to hear about. He grew up in a broken family and felt that the only way to solve his problems was to completely ignore them and run away from them. This was shown throughout many experiences in his life. Cynthia was the rock in his life, the only thing that stayed the same and never changed… until one day John decided he no longer wanted her in his life. Cynthia Lennon proves to be a true inspiration because throughout her story, no matter what is thrown at her, she is selfless and genuine. The way that John treated her and Julian was horrifying at times. Had I never read this book, I wouldn’t have realized all that was behind their music.
Part of me is slightly scarred from this, because I now know what songs were written during the time of his abusive drug use and his unfaithfulness to Cynthia with the dreadful (in my opinion) Yoko Ono. She seemed to have a power over John which came across to me as creepy. Also, she always appeared cold and evil-hearted, and almost searching for ways to make Cynthia and Julian miserable. Also, John and Yoko always talked of just wanting peace and love, but at the same time John was refusing to make peace with Cynthia who stood by him for so many years and disregarding his own son, Julian. How does this make sense? What kind of peace and love was he talking about? Reports say that he was doing drugs at this time, but I still don’t see that as an excuse to mistreat your family. However I obviously don’t know his life, so I cannot judge him. I just have so many more questions now, as I’m sure many other people do as well.
Regardless, this book definitely made me think and has given me a new perspective on this band. I still love and really enjoy their music, however now I will just look at it in a completely different, almost more personal way.

Does anybody else remember Trey Phillips from Laguna Beach? He was the only one who seemed to know what he wanted to do with his life while everyone else focused on the drama of who was hooking up with who. Some of the episodes of LB showed him doing fashion shows and then he eventually moved to New York.
I have always wondered what happened to this adorable boy so I finally looked into it. Turns out he’s now doing a pretty cool project called City Love and is an assistant designer to Vera Wang! Also, he still seems to be friends with LC which is awesome. They were the best ones from that show anyway!
The photograph I included are of him during his time on Laguna Beach, and the other is with artwork from his newest project http://www.thecityloveproject.com/
